Late 19th Century French Hand-Carved Oak Prie Dieu or Prayer Chair With Columns
This French hand-carved oak prayer chair, or prie-dieu, in French, features double columns at the back that support the armrest. Rosettes adorn the die joints at the top and bottom of the columns. The back displays an intricately hand-carved rustic cross and is wrapped with grape leaves. There is a crown of thorns hanging on the cross. Originally used in a private chapel or by a wealthy patron in a church, this prie-dieu served as a kneeling bench with an upper armrest for hands in prayer. Beautifully carved and upholstered in mohair, this prayer chair is a fine addition to a collection of religious objects, circa 1880
